Has Singapore become too safe for its own good? Singapore has built an extraordinary society. Our hawker centres are nothing like America’s food courts. They let you get a Michelin-rated meal for five dollars, and even fresh kopi at 6am. But why do so many ambitious Singaporeans leave and never come back? I think part of the answer is our relationship with risk. We’re great at producing engineers, doctors, and professionals. But are we inspiring enough entrepreneurs, inventors, and dreamers? In Singapore, extraordinary people often succeed despite the system, rather than because of it. Take startups. Our grants, schemes and support are extraordinary. But when I told people I was quitting a stable job to build a company, I saw another side. The first question was never “what are you building?” It was “what’s your backup plan?” Failure felt like something to hide, not something to learn from. And I wonder if that reflects our society. We’re great at building systems that work for everyone. But do we make enough room for the exceptional? Living in San Francisco (USA) 🇺🇸 made me see things differently. There’s something powerful about a culture where people believe they can change the world. I don’t want Singapore to become America. I want us to preserve what makes Singapore special. If you’ve ever stared at a huge restaurant menu and just ordered the same thing again, you’ll probably think you’re indecisive. Too many options. You freeze. You default. If you’re like most people, your instinct is immediate: that’s just me. But it’s not you. It’s design. There’s a set of rules designers use called the laws of UX. They’re based on how your brain actually works. Hick’s law. The more choices you see, the longer you take to decide. That’s why the best menus are short. Fitts’s law. The bigger and closer a button is, the easier it is to tap. That’s why “Buy now” is huge and right under your thumb, and “Cancel subscription” is tiny and hidden. Jakob’s law. You expect every app to work like the ones you already use. That’s why every shopping cart sits in the top right corner. Once you know these, you see them everywhere.
